and refute it

if i were running a school, i’d have one standing assignment that would begin in the first grade and go on all through school, every week:

that each child should bring in something said by an authority

it could be a teacher,

or something they see in print,

but something that they don’t agree with—

and refute it.

watch with awe

// people are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be.

when i look at a sunset,

i don’t find myself saying,

“soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner.”

i don’t try to control a sunset.

// i watch with awe as it unfolds.

on becoming a person: a therapist’s view of psychotherapy

seek connection

seek connection.

seek

       one another.

seek for parts of yourself

       within someone else.

seek for parts of them in you.

seek connection to understand,

to learn, seek connection

learning to be human

we humanize what is going on in the world

and in ourselves

only by speaking of it,

and in the course of speaking of it

[ .we learn to be human. ]
